Artist statement

I was born in the north of Romania in the Transylvania region in a city with medieval architecture and significant marks of the Austro-Hungarian Empire: Trâgu-Mureş.  I moved to the south of  the country, in  Bucharest to complete my studies and obtained my BA in Visual Art & Sculpture in the mid 90's.  Since then I have visited Italy on a number to occasions to study its Renaissance and Ancient heritage.

Formative Years

My first memory of clay was the trek in hard winter during childhood with a sledge to 'beg' the brick factory's watchmen for some clay from which I made my first toys and pots.   During my teens and whilst still at school, I built my first steel structure by welding and shaping a human figure to be finished using clay.

Alongside sculpture and photography (which gave me an understanding of subject, composition and environment), I became interested in church ornamentation and imagery (forbidden fruit during that regime period). I was fascinated by the dimensions of the frescoes, colors and serenity. It was the first time I had seen decorative art on such a huge scale. It was here that I found my first mentor – an experienced designer, painter and decorator who seemed older than the church itself.

Later, in the mid 1980's, I discovered the beauty of woodworking and worked with a well known artist to produce my first major work - a fully carved decorated gate for a church (approximately eight meters of wood joints, relief figurative carving and finishing). I had a number of excellent mentors and teachers before undertaking my own studies of nature, ancient philosophy and Greek and Roman antique art including restoration and conservation projects

Current Work

My latest works are my responses to the issues found in daily life based on observation.

Some words can define a crowd, an individual or group of individuals and their attitude or behaviour. Ignorance, paranoia, excesses (all kind), imitation, are all examples of disharmony.

For example:

In the same way the mass produced object originated with the first machine in the early XIX century.  In  contemporary society and daily life we observe the mass produced individual, ready to swallow everything for the sake of the fashion or the new.

I do like the conventional and unconventional materials to express my thoughts.

My works titles are: “ Passenger”, “Reply”, “The shopper”, “Mademoiselle riz”, “Mass produced” etc.

Art is a way to express feelings, thoughts, and ideas in various materials, using different tools, and different ways of expression.

You choose to do it if the temptation  to communicate something to others is also a motivation.
